It&#8217;s the business equivalent of a Social Security number. Here&#8217;s a breakdown of when you should apply for EIN and why it&#8217;s needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Do I Need an EIN?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The IRS uses the EIN to identify your business on all tax documents and forms.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You will need an EIN if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have employees.<\/li>\n<li>Your business is structured as a corporation, partnership or multi-partner limited liability company.<\/li>\n<li>You pay employment and excise taxes or file returns for sales of alcohol, tobacco or firearms.<\/li>\n<li>Your business has a Keogh plan or solo 401(k) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalfunding.com\/blog\/retirement-plans-small-business-owners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retirement plan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You withhold taxes on income, not wages, earned by a non-resident alien.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Do You Use an EIN?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You need an EIN for your business to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"\">File tax reports and pay federal income taxes and Social Security\/Medicare taxes<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Get a business license or permit<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Apply for a loan<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Open a bank account<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Apply for a business credit card<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Issue Form 1099 to independent contractors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Businesses That Don&#8217;t Need an EIN<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Although the IRS requires most types of businesses to have an EIN, there are exceptions. Sole proprietorships without any employees and single-owner LLCs can use the owner&#8217;s Social Security number instead of getting a separate EIN for their businesses.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">How to Get an EIN<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Applying for an EIN is free, and there are four ways to apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Online &#8211;<\/strong> The IRS prefers that you make an application online through their <a href=\"https:\/\/sa.www4.irs.gov\/modiein\/individual\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIN Assistant<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phone &#8211;<\/strong> If you want to apply by phone, you can call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax line at 800-829-4933.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fax &#8211;<\/strong> To apply by fax, download a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fss4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form SS-4<\/a>, complete the questions and fax a signed copy to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/filing\/where-to-file-your-taxes-for-form-ss-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRS<\/a> at 855-641-6935. Include your fax number for a reply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mail &#8211;<\/strong> Download Form SS-4 and mail the completed application to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/filing\/where-to-file-your-taxes-for-form-ss-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internal Revenue Service<\/a>, Attn: EIN Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If your business started small and is growing, you may want to use that new EIN for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalfunding.com\/small-business-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">small business loan<\/a> to help meet your goals.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IRS requires certain businesses to have an EIN.
