There are millions of these productive businesses sprinkled across America. In fact, the Hispanic U.S. Chamber of Commerce represents more than 4.7 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushcc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hispanic small business owners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, research shows that this group of entrepreneurs isn&#8217;t always as <a href=\"https:\/\/As%20an example, when applying for a small business loan, Hispanic and black business owners are provided a lot less information about loan requirements, are offered less application assistance by loan officers, rarely receive business cards and are typically drilled about their personal finances.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">respected or supported<\/a> in the same way their non-Hispanic peers are. But they lean on each other to get through and achieve success.<\/p>\n<p>Take Roberto Rodriguez as an example; he operates a handyman business in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He reflects: &#8220;Other Hispanic business owners and their success greatly drove me to start my own business, and their early help made things easier for me. Now, I look for ways to give back and inspire the next generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hispanic Heritage Month 2021 \u2014 from September 15 \u2013 October 15 \u2014 is the perfect time to do just that. So, whether you&#8217;re a Hispanic entrepreneur looking to lift up others in your community or a non-Hispanic business owner looking to support your Hispanic colleagues, here are a few resources that can help Hispanic-owned businesses thrive.<\/p>\n<h2>Dedicated Funding Opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Research has found that Hispanic business owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsb.stanford.edu\/faculty-research\/publications\/2018-latino-entrepreneurship-gap-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">receive less funding<\/a> than those from other ethnicities. Further, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsb.stanford.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publication-pdf\/report-slei-2018-latino-entrepreneurship-gap.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 in 10<\/a> Hispanic entrepreneurs who needed additional financing did not even apply for business loans because they thought it would not be approved by a lender.<\/p>\n<p>With these realities in mind, it&#8217;s important to learn and let others know about business- and government-funding initiatives that prioritize Hispanic-owned businesses \u2014 of which there are many.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aofund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Accion<\/a>, a small business funding network<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfifund.gov\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Community Development Financial Institutions Fund<\/a>, a list of banks with funding dedicated to underserved communities<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grants.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grants.gov<\/a>, a federal portal for grants, including targeted programs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/federal-contracting\/contracting-assistance-programs\/8a-business-development-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The SBA&#8217;s 8(a) Business Development Program<\/a>, a federal program that awards funds to &#8220;small, disadvantaged businesses&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgrants.org\/p\/mbda-business-grants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minority Business Development Agency<\/a>, an organization that connects eligible businesses with angel investors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 8px auto;\" title=\"Happy attractive smiling latino woman sitting cafe, co-working urban space, grining delighted, reading paper and make corrections, prepare for office meeting, sit near opened laptop drink cappuccino\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nationalfunding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/happy-attractive-smiling.jpg\" alt=\"Happy attractive smiling latino woman sitting cafe, co-working urban space, grining delighted, reading paper and make corrections, prepare for office meeting, sit near opened laptop drink cappuccino\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Mentorship Programs<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, the support new small business owners need to grow isn&#8217;t monetary \u2014 it&#8217;s access to knowledge. Rodriguez notes that a dedicated Hispanic-owned business grant was instrumental to his business growth early on. However, he mentions another, less-obvious area of need.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I needed help with my accounting systems,&#8221; says Rodriguez. So, he sought help and was paired up with a mentor through a small business program (who he later hired as his business grew). &#8220;Accessing business services can help you close information gaps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.score.org\/hispanic-entrepreneurs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCORE for Hispanic Entrepreneurs<\/a> can help you connect with mentors and critical resources other than funding.<\/p>\n<h2>Small Business Groups and Networks<\/h2>\n<p>Rodriguez&#8217;s business relies primarily on word-of-mouth advertising and promotion. &#8220;When other small businesses recommend your work, it helps attract new customers and says you&#8217;re trusted,&#8221; says Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of business groups dedicated to promoting and celebrating the success of Hispanic-owned businesses. Some options that offer a variety of programs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushcc.com\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw7--KBhAMEiwAxfpkWBFKPylNOMkMd8HAV4P1J4wem32kUqm-ENAF-PRU4wICRllylEjHARoCwQcQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hasb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hispanic Association of Small Businesses<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lban.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Latino Business Action Network<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lulac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">League of United Latin American Citizens<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Take the time to meet other business owners,&#8221; suggests Rodriguez. &#8220;Not only can they become major advocates of your business, but you learn from them, discuss the difficult times you&#8217;ve both faced and get smart ideas for overcoming challenges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Celebrating Together<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a non-Hispanic business owner, consider how you might support your Hispanic peers during Hispanic Heritage Month 2021. Could you source inventory or services from a Hispanic-owned business? Could you share a business&#8217;s work with your customer base as part of your social media or newsletter marketing campaigns? Or might there be some other way to show your support?<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how you get involved, now is a great time to celebrate the tremendous contributions of Hispanic business owners and
