Ron, tell us a little about Beatty Lawn & Tree Service.
"The company started over 70 years ago."
"It’s been in the family for three generations already. My grandfather owned a timber farm and made railroad ties and telephone poles. After World War II he started trimming trees, and that’s how the business started.
"I’ve been involved since I was a kid, working with my dad. I decided this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. Since I’ve taken over we’ve added year-round services like lawn care, landscaping and snow removal to take the business to the next level. We’ve also moved into commercial work—a medical center, condos, etc. But the core of the business is still tree work.
"Some of our clients have been with us for 70-some years — through my dad, through me, and my daughter now. My oldest daughter and her husband have been involved for 12 to 14 years and are next in line to take the business over."
What triggered your need for a loan?
"It takes money to make money."
"If you want to stay in this economy and be competitive you need good equipment. I had a few pieces of equipment I had to put money into, and I needed working capital so operations wouldn’t have to change. Cash flow is very important in a small business.
"Back in the day when I was younger, we’d always buy second-hand equipment that was usually broken when we got it, and my dad would work on it. He’d come in after working all day with tree work, which is very hard, and he’d have to work on equipment. And I said to myself, if I ever make this business happen, I’m going to have new equipment, I’m going to have stuff that’s reliable.
"I had money in the bank as a cushion so I could have squeaked by without borrowing, but I didn’t want to do that any more. I wanted to try a short-term loan. So the very first people I called was National Funding."
How has National Funding helped?
"Running a business isn’t always roses."
"Every day it’s a struggle to make the money to pay the bills. Banks have tightened up, so it’s nice to have different financing options for us little guys. National Funding was very easy to work with, so it made me rest easier at home and made my people work better. They really helped when I needed it.
"I have another big project coming up in the fall – running all the landscaping for a medical center. I’ll want to ask for more money then, and it will be even easier. And hopefully I build a business — with my father and my grandfather — that extends on to my daughter and then their children. And one of these days when I’m up there I can look down and see that it’s 10 generations."
What is it like to work with National Funding?
"John, my National Funding loan specialist, was terrific."
"He knew where I was coming from, was right on it and I liked the way he presented himself better than anyone else. He made the process very easy, he got back with me the same day, told me the amount I qualified for — which was way above my expectation — and gave me options. I liked having a choice. I didn’t have a bunch of documents I had to sign and there was no hassle."
"John set me up on a loan package with a daily repayment. I really like that. I know what it’s going to be and there’s no big payment at the end of the month. It makes it easy.
I would definitely recommend National Funding. They do what they say they’re going to do and spell it all out. They were upfront and there was nothing hidden."
